Another stop along the Oregon Trail is a place called Independence Rock. Named by fur trappers on July 4, 1824, many west traveling emigrants left messages on the rock or simply carved their names on it. The state has conveniently created a highway rest area at this place, so Mary and I laid over in the lot and hiked and photographed it in late evening and early morning light.
